WASHINGTON — The Alabama Supreme Court overstepped its authority by refusing to recognize the adoption by a parent in a same-sex couple that was granted by a Georgia court, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday.
The court reversed the Alabama court in a summary reversal on Monday morning, ruling in a brief, unsigned opinion that the Alabama Supreme Court had failed to give "full faith and credit" — a constitutional requirement — to the Georgia court's decision granting the adoption. No justices dissented from the decision.
